Education – The Pursuit of Knowledge or Marks?

Education: The vigour of knowledge or the demon of marks

Education has the power of changing norms, society, thinking and lead a better and brighter way in future. As respected Nelson Mandela quoted, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, it definitely is. We all know that currently the virtue of educating someone is less but making money is more. However, the way children intake the knowledge is also changing, everything now depends on grades either it be school or college. Intelligence of a student can only be determined by grades and nothing else. Countless brilliant people have talked about how we are lacking in schooling nowadays, yet those thoughts just remain thoughts. Education might differ for everyone, for few it might be a PHD degree and for few it might be a B.com degree. Although the degree might not be the same but virtue of education is equal for all.

True education comes from the passion of knowledge Pronouncements to follow,

  1. System needs complete renovation than just tweaks
  2. The opportunities in the current system
  3. Charity begins at home and so does education
  4. Small steps lead to big changes

Let’s have a look at what these pronouncements have to say and will they help to change our schooling system.

1. System needs complete renovation than just tweaks

We often might have heard our parents say that their education and the way of education was so different from that of ours, that is because the curriculum and style of education has changed over the years now. The syllabus, the books, the illustrations and graphic might have changed but the core of education has always remained the same.

As mentioned earlier, education is currently just based on grades. Because of this system students have to grind themselves to their fullest in order to reach their parents and teachers expectations. The are awake till midnight just to study few even wake up at 4 in the morning to study during their examinations, why? Just to fulfil everyone’s hopes and expectations and to not let them down. Surprisingly, even a 4th grader is facing problems like peer pressure and depressions that’s how bad our education system is functioning. We really need to change the way our education system works so that children can intake knowledge rather than just being a book worm.

2. The opportunities in the current system

Opportunities are never at anyone’s doorstep, so whenever we are exposed to opportunities never miss to grab one. Nothing is more expensive than missing an opportunity. Specially, in such situations it’s important to grab opportunity and ace it. The world is filled with companies offering various products and services where children can understand their abilities, their intelligent and emotional quotient, why to prevent such opportunities where we can learn and grow.

Schools and colleges are now understanding the need of such activities and hence are adapting them in their curriculums.

Companies offering cognitive growth services, wellness initiatives, educational technologies and so on will enable school and management reflect on their academic curriculum. This symbiosis gives rise to a thriving economy and we are transforming in a way schooling operates in future.

3. Charity begins at home and so does education

We all have faced the pressure of boards result, but was that pressure doubled when you realised that your neighbour aunt is going to come right on time and ask you that how much did you score in boards and if you don’t fulfil that aunt’s expectation she is going to spread that news like fire in a jungle. This is because Indian education system is giving way too much importance to marks. Schools, colleges, educational institutions and not to forget even parents foreground marks but not a child’s potential. Not to blame anyone but our society is shaped in such a way that everyone just focuses on marks, but it’s high time to change this norm and understand the child’s potentials, interests and abilities other than just academics.

It’s by research that every day 28 students try to commit suicide because of pressure given by school, colleges and parents. We can change this situation if we want by not pressurizing them with grades and expectations and by letting them explore their future how-ever they want.

4. Small steps lead to big changes

We’ve heard all leaders saying that failure is a part of every success story and failures are like stepping stones to reach our goals well our leaders are wise. We often tend to lose hope when failure crosses our path that should not be the case, we should gather all our spirits and defeat failure and then step up.

Prepare to make move for yourself and decide what you want, knowledge or marks. Best of luck deciding what’s best for you.
